“...But one day I will understand everything, just as everything about me has been fully understood. Until then, there are three things that remain: Faith, hope, and love - yet love surpasses them all. So, above all else, let love be the beautiful prize for which you run.” 1 Corinthians 13 v 12b & 13. The word ‘love’ seems to be used in so many ways such as I love my car, I love ice cream or even I love the latest tv series. Many of us have very little understanding of what real love looks like. Heidi Baker, who is a Christian evangelist and writer often says, ‘Love has to look like something’. Love is not a romantic gesture or a feeling of butterflies. Love is commitment and it takes courage and a dogged determination to act with kindness, loyalty and love in all circumstances.
Many people who love their animals would go without themselves to ensure their beloved animals are looked after and the love of an animal has carried us through this time of COVID-19 isolation and hardship. I know many people who love their dogs and depend on them for their mental wellbeing. Many daters who thought that they were loved realised that they are let down when the worst happens, they discover what they had was a romantic feeling - not the rock solid, counting the cost, enduring commitment that is required to get you through the stormy weather. This passage from C.S. Lewis: “To love at all is to be vulnerable. Love anything, and your heart will certainly be wrung and possibly be broken. If you want to make sure of keeping it intact, you must give your heart to no one.” Love costs. It cost Jesus everything. But the alternative is emptiness. Some of us decide to never fall in love again to prevent being hurt. The thought of being vulnerable to hurt when we love others can be too scary to contemplate. But love and vulnerability are part of being human. Loving is what Jesus called us to do. If your heart has been broken but we need to love as humans.
We grow and mature as Christians when we pray and love The Lord. We gain wisdom and we discover just how comforting the love of God is, when we embrace what it is to be a follower of Jesus and to love like He did, without counting the cost. Love is everlasting and so I want to be as much a part of that as I possibly can down here on earth. Prayer: Thank you, Jesus, that you love us. We cannot begin to imagine what that love cost you, but we can only be thankful and grateful for your love. Thank you that you mend broken hearts and the one we can run to when our world falls apart. Help us to love like you do. Amen
