The promise means that we don't have to do anything but believe and love the Lord, we don't have to work for our salvation it is already paid for in full, by the blood of Jesus that was shed for us on the cross.

The birth of Christ at Christmas was the pathway to the cross. As God watched the birth of His son He was already feeling the pain and the sorrow of the death on the cross.
