Many of us have read these words and know the words that Jesus said that the greatest gift of the spirit is love. How do you feel about that? It is easy to love the loveable, but can we love the unlovable? The person who gossips about us and the person that we find most annoying? The people I most admire are those willing to give up everything for the poor or to be martyred for their faith: even thinking about people like this makes me feel inadequate. And yet, it had never occurred to me that even such things as these can be done with impure motives.

Love people, all people. No conditions. Love is unconditional. Life and love is not about what you gain, it’s about what you give.’ Love has no cost and no price. Jesus loved us when we were at our most unlovable. He suffered for love He gave his life willingly for love. Love must come from pure motives, wanting no recognition or praise. Love is given freely and does not look for recognition.
We are so attuned to getting something for our efforts, that this attitude can seem totally foreign to us, but that is the example that Jesus left us.
